Abstract

539,980. Moulding wheel tyres. FIRESTONE TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd. March 9, 1940, No. 4461. Convention date, June 3, 1939. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Safety inner tubes of the kind comprising concentric inner and outer compartments are made from an endless band 10 having inner and outer plies 10a, 10b the margins of the wider ply 10b being covered with thin strips 11 of unvulcanized rubber. The band is stretched over an annular expansible rubber core 13, Fig. 2, the marginal portion being bent over the core by a roller 15. The band after provision of an apertured washer 16 and vulcanization is disconnected from the core and, after its edges have been buffed, is stretched on a drum 20 in which position it is covered by a slightly larger unvulcanized band 21, the overlapping edges being joined by strips 22 of "tie gum" and an additional strip 23 of unvulcanized rubber being bent over one marginal portion. The structure is then removed from the drum, fitted with an inflation valve stem 26, and the unattached margin of the strip 23 is attached to the face margin of the joint strips 10, 21 to form the completed tube, Fig. 5, which is then vulcanized.
