Abstract

464,681. Pneumatic tyres ; moulding. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. Oct. 16, 1935, No. 28576. Convention date, Feb. 2. [Classes 144 (i) and 144 (ii)] [Also in Group V] In a method of building an air tube comprising an inner portion and an outer enveloping portion spaced from, but communicating with the inner portion, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6 of Specification 456,294, fabric plies 10, 11, Fig. 1, are built up on a drum 14, Fig. 2, and the oblique ends spliced to form an endless band. After the insertion of a valve stem 16, the edges of the band are folded over towards each other, leaving a gap which is closed by a rubber band 17, Fig. 3. One or more vent plugs 20 having been fitted in the fabric adjacent the edge of the band 17, the flattened tube is reversed on the drum, then folded over as shown in Fig. 5, and partially vulcanized in a mould which may be shaped as shown in Fig. 6 to produce a flat outer periphery on the tube, or to form a re-entrant periphery. After removal from the mould, an additional band of rubber 28, Fig. 10, is attached to the base portion of the tube, the vent plugs are removed, and an elastic band 33 is secured to the edges of the band 28, to form an envelope for the built-up inner tube portion. Vulcanization of the complete structure is then completed whilst inflated in a mould, 34, 35, Fig. 11, in which the portion 33 is distended so as to leave a substantial air-space between the two portions of the tube.
