Abstract

533,014. Feeding sheets. BATTEY, A. P., and BACKHOUSE, H. T. July 3, 1939, No. 19347. [Class 100 (i)] In sheet-feeding mechanism of the kind in which the sheets are registered laterally by a reciprocating suction or mechanical sheet gripper movable to and from a fixed side leg, the reciprocation of the gripper is effected by means of a closed fluid-containing pipe, e.g., a flexible pipe 6, Fig. 1, connected to a cylinder 7 fitted with means for varying the fluid pressure in timed relation with the operation of the sheet feeding mechanism. This pressurevarying means may comprise a piston 8 moved in one direction by a cam 10 and in the other direction by a spring 12. The suction gripper 1 is connected to a piston 2 in a cylinder 5 to which the pipe 6 is secured. The gripper 1 may be replaced by a gripper of the kind described in Specification 485,252, and the grippers may be moved either to or from the side lay 19 by the fluid pressure and returned by spring means. Also diaphragms may replace the pistons, and in one modification suction may be used to effect or assist in effecting the movements of the sucker in one direction. The invention is applicable to machines as in Specification 427,041. Specification 464,873 also is referred to.
