Abstract

532,919. Junction boxes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and BARDSLEY, J. R. Sept. 26, 1939, No. 26664. Convention date, Oct. 18, 1938. [Class 38 (i)] A box for connecting a cable laid in a gasfilled sheath to an overhead line and for containing loading coils &c. comprises a hermetically sealed chamber having hand-holes and outlet terminals. The chamber 5 which may be divided by a partition 14 has a boss 12 to which the sheath 11 of the cable is welded or soldered. Some of the apparatus contained in the box can be installed in the factory but for making connections to such apparatus as must be installed when the box is being erected, handholes covered by plates 19 seated on rubber &c. gaskets 37 are provided. The outlet terminals 20 are mounted in bushes 26 screwed into the chamber wall with ceramic &c. insulators 21 clamped between lead washers 27, 28. The internal leads 22 are passed through the insulator and soldered in the stems 23 which are then screwed and cemented into the insulators. The stems 23 act as binding-posts for the overhead wires and are sheltered by a canopy.
