Abstract
532,201. Gas-blast switches ; actuation of switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 21, 1939, No. 24060. Convention date, Aug. 20, 1938. Addition to 524,983. [Class 38 (v)] The invention of the parent Specification is modified in that the extinguishing-head 1 has, in front of the main hollow movable contact 6, a ring-shaped contact 4 forming a blast outlet into the isolating-gap between the two heads. The contact 6 is connected by arms 8 to a rod 7, which carries a piston 9 working in a cylinder 5, which is carried by a further cylinder 13. The intercylinder space defines an exhaust passage 14 provided with radial cooling-fins 15. Guide members are provided at 12 for the movable contact 6, 7. The two contacts 4 are separated simultaneously with the supply of gas, which also separates the contacts 6 from contacts 4, and blows on the arcs drawn between the contacts 4, 6 in each head, and also on that between the two contacts 4, as shown by the arrows. This causes the former arcs to loop; as in Fig. 2, the two loops eventually joining up in the isolating- gap and producing a single arc between the two contacts 6, the blast holding this arc centrally in the contacts 4 and protecting the latter.
