532,097. Gas fires; radiants ; stove supports. GAS LIGHT & COKE CO., HOLLIDAY, G. C., ANDREW, L. W., and VOICE, E. W. April 13, 1939, Nos. 11192, 28421 and 29650. [Class 126] A gas fire for use in an open fireplace comprises a cradle 3 supporting a refractory body 1 cut to fit the fireplace and having its radiating face, extending upwardly and rearwardly, formed with converging ribs 2, a non-atmospheric burner 19 directing its flame into a combustion chamber 23 formed between a lower ribless portion 24 of the body 1 and a firebrick strip 25, perforated refractory plaques 4 resting on the ribs 2 at the sides and rear of the body 1 and provided with ribs 5 of their undersides to form spaces in which the combustion of the gases issuing from the chamber 23 is completed, plaques 6, 7 of similar construction to the plaques 4 forming a bridge across a combustion space between side plaques 4, and cobbles 27, 28 of fireclay and carborundum covering the plaques 4, 6, 7. The cradle 3 comprises a frame 8 resting on a rear leg 9 and side pillars 13, 14. The side pillars may rest on either of two base surfaces 15, 16 slightly inclined to one another, according to the height at which the leg 9 is attached to the frame by a pin-and-slot connection 10 at its uppper end. The distance between the side pillars may be adjustable and fire bars 29 connecting the pillars may be telescopic. The cobbles are illuminated by a long flabby flame issuing from a separately regulated widemouthed burner 30 connected to the burner 19. A lighting hole 26 is provided in the strip 25. The plaques may be formed with interengaging recesses and projections at their peripheries or may be spaced apart slightly. A fender may be provided to cover the burner structure. Rods such as are described in Specification 505,990 may be substituted for the plaques. The body may be wedge shaped and rest on a horizontal support and its upper surface may be formed with T or V-shaped ribs to form combustion spaces.
