1,457,392 I. c. POPPER COFFEE URN Filed NOV. 30, 1920 Patented June 5, 1923 ISAAC C. POPPER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE THERDZ COMPANY, OF i YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE. V
COFFEE URN.
Application filed November 30, 1920. Serial No. 427,292.
To all whom it may concern: 2
Be it known that I, ISAAC C. POPPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and 5 State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cofiee Urns, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to an improvement.
in coffee urns.
The object is to provide a combustion chamber for coffee-urns, in which a portable fuel may be used, with adequate provision to support combustion, and to prevent the 5 flame from being interfered with, or extinguished by, drafts or air pressure.
This invention includes acombustion chamber constructed and-adapted to lit the base of a coffee urn and afford support,
therefor, this. combustion chamber having air-inlets and outlets formed therein, and a drawer movably connected with the combustion chamber adapted to receive the portable fuel and approximately center it beneath thebottom of the urn when slid "in place and fastened.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section.
A, represents an urn such as used for keeping coffee hot in hotels, restaurants, dining-cars, and other publicplaces.
B, represents my improved combustion chamber. This preferably corresponds in $5 shape with the urn, that is to say if the urn is of cylindrical-form, the combustion-chamber is of similar shape, with a slight flare 1 at the top to receive and fit the outer edge of the base of the urn, so that the 4.0 two when together substantially form a continuation of each other, giving a neat and attractive appearance, and raise the urn the desired height above the support upon which it is placed. The combustion chamber preferably has three horizontal rows of holes 2, 3 and 4, the holes being conveniently placed about an inch apart, and'the holes of the center row 3 being slightly larger, it being desirable to make the holes of this row somewhat larger than the holes of the upper and lower rows.
A drawer C is fitted to slide in a pair of runners 15 therefor, in and out through an opening 5 in one side of the combustion chamber. The outer plate 6 of this drawer is of a form to fit and close the opening 5, andhas corresponding perforations to those in the combustion chamber, so that;
affords a support for the can 10'of fuel,
which, when in place is substantially gauged beneath the center of the urn, so that the heat from the burning fuel is centrally and equally distributed over the bottom of theurn, and its. intensity is felt. at the spot where it should bev applied and distributed The drawer is provided with a handle 11,
. and connected with the inner end. of this handle is a catch as a means for fastening the drawer in place in the combustion chamber when closed by simply turning the handle.
Lugs 12, preferably three in number are equidistantly placed at the base of the com-' i bustion-chamber as a means for screwing or bolting the combustion chamber to the table or other support.
While the combustion chamber may be made of any approved metal, it is preferable to use sheet-copper, nickle, steel or'the like.
By actual test, it has been found that an urn thus equipped with my improved combustion chamber, with the perforations. as
disclosed, is an effectual means of not only supporting the combustion of the portable fuel, but as a meansfor preserving the flame unaffected or influenced by either drafts or air pressure even in a rapidly moving dining-car, which obviously aflords a severe test.
I claim: through said opening and constructed and A cofiee urn made in two interfitting sec arranged to receive, hold and properly tions forming continuations of each other, place cans of fuel beneath the urn when 10 one an urn proper, and the other a combusthe drawer is slid in place. 7 5 tion-chamber, .the bottom or combustion In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
chamber having an opening at the side, and a drawer fitted to s lide in and out ISAAC C. POPPER.
