trollers, of which the following is a specifica.-
tion.
The object of our invention is to provide a combination adjustable gas or 'gasolene saving appliance and heat-controller in the form of a supplemental top to be placed upon any gas-range or gasolene-stove and embodying novel features of construction,
whereby the heat may be directed in various directions from one or more active burners of the range or stove, so thatcooking utensils may be placed over other burners of the range or stove and be heated sufficiently for cooking purposes, although such other burners be unlighted, thereby effecting important economies in heat.
Theinvention consists, essentially, .in an;
imp oved construction of. supplemental range or stove top which may be made of any material or metal or combination of metals and of one or more main parts, said supplemental top being provided with in-' closed sides, wher eby'it may be supported detachably upon the stationary top of a range or stove, and also embodiying heat directin and controlling parts, w ereby one or more ighted burners of the stove or range may be utilized for heating other utensilholding portions of the supplemental top.
. For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and. also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following descriptionand accompanying drawings, in whi ch- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved supplemental stove-top. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on the line X X of Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of the supplemental top. Fig. 4is a section on the line of'Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the damper.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all the views 0 the drawings by the same reference characters. a
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates our improved supplemental top provided with vertical inclosing walls, by which it ma be removably supported in an elevated posi-' tion on the stationary top of a range or stove. In the. present instance the supplemental top 1 is provided with five heat-openings 3,
four of which correspond in relation to the four burners of the stove and are rovided with any desired design or shape 0 utensilholding radial arms or fingers 4, as shown; The-fifth opening 3 at the center of them may or may not be provided, as desired, a thoughit is preferred that it shall be employed, and it may or may not be located over a burner of the range or stove. The other four openings, however, are each located in vertical alinement and in spaced relationto the respective burners.
For convenience in describing the operation of the device we have lettered each of the heat-openings A, B, (LID, and E, respectively. Extending entirely .across the supplemental top 1 .is a damper in theiform of a partition 5, which in the present instance is journaled at its lower edge on a rod or s in dle 6, mounted in the front and rear wal s of the top, .(the damper being situated at one sideoof a line drawn midway between the sides of. the to and said rod or spindle expartition the top may be divided into two in-' dependent or distinct com artments, 'or when the damper is turned own into horizontal osition these two compartments are merge ments is provided at one end with dra -di- ,recting openings 8, formed in the rear wall ofthe top and controlled independently by sliding closures 9. The other the supplemental top are preferably cominto' one.. Eachof said' comparb three walls of pletely closed, and the front wall is provided with observation-panels 10, of mica or other transparent material. As shown in the-rec grawm s, two of the burner-openings A and are ment with one of the observation-panels 10 and its correspondingdraft-opening 8 in the rear, while the other two openings C and D are similarly alined with the other observaocated between and in direct alinetion-panel 10 and the other draft-opening 8.
The marginal edges of the openings A to E, inclusive, are preferably depressed below the remaining portions of the top 1 for the purpose of providing de ressed seats 12 for the accommodation of etachable lids 13, de-
llO
signed to fit thereon, whenever desired, under certain conditions. To assist in maintaining the top 1 in a rigid position and prevent it from sagging by the weight of a utensil or other article supported thereby, we have pro vided a number of supporting-legs 14, projecting from the lower ace of the top 1 and designed to contact with the upper surface of the stationary top of the range or stove. These legs may be of any desired shape or construction and number.
In the ractieal use of our improved supplementa top it will be seen that when t damper or partition is in raised position, dividing the top into two compartments, the draft-openin in one compartment being open and the burner underneath the heatopening A of the same compartment being ignited, the heat will generate not only under the opening A, but also under the opening B in the same compartment, sufficiently to cook over the opening B the same as over the opening A, providing a pan, kettle, pot, or the like or one of the lids 13 is supplied over the opening A, thereby utilizing the two false burners constituted by the openings A and B with thefone blaze, and consequently saving approximately one-half of the cost of the gas or gasolene as fuel. Again, if the said damper is turned down into a horizontal position to merge the two compartments into one, and the draft-opening adjacent the opening 1) is open, while that adjacent the opening B is closed, it being understood that the burner under the opening A is ignited, it will be seen that the heat will be generated sufficiently from under the opening A to all of the other heat-openings B to E, escaping through the draft opening adjacent the burner-opening D and providing, therefore, means for cooking upon all of the heat-openings, provided those not covered witlivessels be covered with lids 13. If desired, also, the supplemental top may be used to heat or keep anything warm, obtaining the same effect as a warming-oven on other stoves or ranges. If the burners under the openings A and C are both ignited, with the ventilators both open, the heat will in like. manner be generated under the other three openings B, D, and E.
It is manifest that the supplemental top may be used as a heating-drum in warming rooms in cold weather by placing the lids 13 or other suitable coverings over the heatopenings, and the device may be regulated when so used by opening one or both of the draft-openings in the rear wall of the supplemental top.
In applying the supplemental top to the stove or range it is preferred that the observation anels should be located directly above .an( corresponding with the front of the said range or stove. It is to be understood that the damper or partition 5 may be provided 011 the end of its red or spindle 6 with a heat-insulating knobto prevent it from becoming heated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A supplemental to for gas, gasolene, or like stoves and embo ying vertical walls projecting downwardly from its edges to space the same from the top of a stove to which it is-applied, said supplemental'top being provided with a plurality of openings over which cooking utensils may be disposed, lids for those of the openings above mentioned adjacent to the rear edge of the supplemental top, a longitudinal partition pivoted to the supplemental to and extending from the front wall thereo to the rear wall at one side of a line drawn midway between the sides of the top, a handle for said partition by which the same may be thrown in a vertical or horizontal positionto separate the space beneath the supplemental to'p into two compartments or form a single large conipartment, damper-openings in the rear wall of the top, each dam dr-opening being located substantially in ine with the openings in the top nearer the adjacent side wall, and a plurality of supporting-legs projecting from the under side of the supplemental top and adapted to rest upon the top of a stove to which said supplemental to may be applied, the top being also provided with the central opening, as specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
