Abstract

531,508. Electron multiplier. FARNSWORTH TELEVISION & RADIO CORPORATION. July 25, 1939, No. 21545. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1938. [Class 39 (i)] In a multiplier primary electrons from the thermionic cathode 11 are controlled by a signal grid 12 and accelerated by an electrode 14 to impact a first secondary emitting electrode 16. The electrons therefrom are accelerated and guided onto a second conical emitter 17 by a perforated electrode 20, a negatively biased disc 41, rings 19 and perforated screen 21 together with the potential on the emitter 17. The rings 19 form the third stage of the multiplier, electrons leaving the emitter 17 at right angles thereto impinging on the rings ; the secondaries emitted by the rings are free to pass to the output anode 4 through the accelerator grid 25. The negatively biased plate 41 opposite a hole in the electrode 20 spreads the electrons over the emitter 17 as described in Specification 521,299. By making the anode 4 form part of the envelope, cooling thereof by a water jacket is facilitated.
