Abstract

531,178. Esters. SOC. OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN BASLE. June 28, 1939, Nos. 18811 and 18812. Convention dates, July 2 and May 11. [Class 2 (iii)] α α<SP>1</SP> - Dialkyl - 4 : 41 - dihydroxystilbenes are acylated with acylating agents suitable for introducing acid residues having more than two carbon atoms. The dihydroxy compounds may be converted into mono- or di-esters; the mono-esters may also be obtained by mild saponification of the di-esters, e.g., by treating them with an alkaline agent in alcohol. Specified acylating agents are those which introduce the residues of propionic, butyric, crotonic, valerianic, caproic, caprylic, capric, lauric, palmitic, stearic, hexahydrobenzoic, benzoic, phenylacetic, lactic, succinic, phthalic, and salicylic acids. Mixed esters may be obtained by treating the mono-esters with acylating agents adapted to introduce an acid residue different from that already present. In examples the preparation of the dipropionic, dibutyric, di-isobutyric, di-n-valerianic, dicaproic', dicaprylitic, dipalmitic, distearic, and dibenzoic esters, the mono-isobutyric ester, and the mixed propionic caproic ester of α : α<SP>1</SP>-diethyl-4 : 4<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxystilbene is described ; also the partial saponification of the dilauric and dicaproic esters to form monoesters. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not restricted to the acylation of α : α<SP>1</SP> - dialkyl - 4 : 41 - dihydroxystilbenes, but includes also the acylation of hydroxy compounds of one stilbene series containing one or more substituents in the ethylene bridge. Specified parent materials include α : α<SP>1</SP> - dialkenyl -, α : α<SP>1</SP> - dialkinyl-, α : α<SP>1</SP> - alkylaryl- and α : α<SP>1</SP> : diaryl - 4 : 41 - dihydroxystilbenes, also α - mono - alkyl -, - alkenyl -, - alkinyl -, and -aryl-stilbenes, and compounds in which the two substituents in the ethylene bridge are united to each other, e.g., by an alkyl chain. Mone- and poly-hydroxy compounds are also included. Formic acid is also specified as an acylating agent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
