Abstract
A mixture of phosphoric acid and a sulphation product of an alcohol containing six or more carbon atoms is used for rust removing or rust proofing. In modifications, salts of the sulphation products may be employed and also products obtained by sulphonating esters of the higher alcohols, or ether-alcohols such as mono octadecyl, octadecenyl and hexadecyl glyceryl ethers. In the case of the esters such as octylacetate, hydrolysis takes place simultaneously with the sulphonation. In examples: (1) a sulphation product of a mixture of stearyl and cetyl alcohols is mixed and heated with phosphoric acid solution; (2) phosphoric acid is mixed with the sodium salts of the sulphation products of alcohols containing 12 to 18 carbon atoms. The compositions are sufficiently viscous to be applied to vertical steel panels. Oleyl, lauryl, carnaubyl, melissyl, myristyl, linoleyl and ricinoleyl alcohols are mentioned and also chlorinated or other halogenated alcohols. Lithium, magnesium, pyridine, piperidine, cyclohexylamine, alkylcyclohexylamine, mono-, di- and tri-alkylamine and alkylolamine salts of the sulphated alcohols may be used, and salts present as impurities such as sodium sulphate or chloride need not be removed.ALSO:A mixture of phosphoric acid and a sulphation product of an alcohol containing six or more carbon atoms is used for rust proofing or rust removing. According to modifications, salts of the sulphation products may be employed, and also products obtained by sulphonating esters of the higher alcohols, or p etheralcohols, e.g. monooctadecyl-, octadecenyl-, and hexadecyl-glyceryl ethers. In examples: (1) a 33 per cent phosphoric acid solution has 3 per cent of the sulphation product of a mixture of stearyl and cetyl alcohols added thereto: (2) 5 per cent of the sodium salts of the sulphation products of alcohols with 12 to 18 carbon atoms, containing sodium sulphate and chloride as impurities, is added to a 35 per cent phosphoric acid solution. Oleyl, lauryl, carnaubyl, myristyl, linoleyl and ricinoleyl alcohols are mentioned and also chlorinated alcohols. Lithium, magnesium, pyridine, piperidine, cyclohexylamine, alkylamine and alkylolamine salts of the sulphated alcohols may be used.ALSO:A mixture of phosphoric acid and a sulphation product of an alcohol containing six or more carbon atoms is used for rust-removing or rustproofing.
