Abstract

530,122. Control of A.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 10, 1939, No. 17062. Convention date, June 10, 1938. [Class 38 (iii)] A synchronous motor 1 is started as an induction motor and, as synchronous speed is approached, a relay 15, having current and voltage coils 18, 19, and an opposing voltage coil 21, is caused by the frequency, magnitude, and phase angle of the armature current pulsations to close its contacts 22 for a sufficient period to enable a time-delayed relay 25 to operate and de-energize a further time-delay relay 24, which energizes a switch 11 to connect the motor field to a source of excitation. The switch 11 retains itself over the contacts 32 of the relay 15, and short-circuits impedance 26, 30 in the circuit of the relay coil 19. Thus when the motor falls out of synchronism and the contacts 22 re-open, the starting connections are restored and the motor field re-excited when the speed again approaches synchronism. Reference is made to Specifications 464,866, 512,361 and 517,676.
