Abstract

517,676. Control of AC. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 3, 1938. No. 22963. Convention date, Aug. 5, 1937. [Class 38 (iii)] The excitation of a sychronous machine is controlled in response to the armature current pulsations produced by weakly exciting the field winding while the machine is operating at subsynchronous speeds. A motor 1 is run up to speed with its armature connected to the supply and its field 4 connected in a closed circuit with resistance 7 and a relay 15 responds at a predetermined speed, in response to the pulsations produced in the armature current by the relative movement between the field poles and the rotating armature field to control a relay 24 and effect full excitation of the motor field 4. The field is weakly excited during the starting period through resistance 11 so that different armature current pulsations are produced by a field pole of one polarity passing like and unlike poles of the rotating armature field, and the relay 15 responds, at a predetermined speed, to the pulsations of armature current, when a predetermined magnetic angular relationship exists between the motor field poles and the rotating armature field.
