Abstract
303,259. Smith, F. Dec. 2, 1927. Alternating-current motors.-A squirrel cage induction motor of three or more phases is started by energizing two or more, but not all, of its phases and subsequently energizing the remaining phase or phases. Additional steps may be obtained by decreasing a resistance in one or more of the phases. The application to a 3-phase motor without resistance steps is shown in Fig. 1 in which power is brought to the terminals 17 of a starter connected, as shown, to the stator coils 10, 11, 12. In the first bridging position 1 of the switch contacts the coils 10, 11 are energized and in the bridging position 2 the third coil 12 is also energized. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a resistance 20 is included in the switch line from the junction of coils 10, 11. In the bridging position 1 of the switch, coils 10 and 11 are energized through the resistance; in position 2 the winding 12 is energibed in addition; and in position 3 the resistance is cut out, giving full motor speed.
