Abstract

530,084. Photographic contact printing apparatus. HUGHS, L. June 16, 1939, No. 17614. [Class 98 (ii)] A vacuum printing frame for use in the photogravure or rotogravure process comprises an open frame to receive the plate carrying the image and a vacuum blanket to clamp a receiving sheet to the plate, the frame having register means to position the plate and the sheet. In the form shown, the frame 5 has a rubber seating 8 for the plate 10 and has hinged to it a frame 15 carrying the blanket 12. The blanket is formed with grooves 13, and has an outer ring 18 of soft rubber which seals against the frame 5. A rib 19 extending round the frame 15 forms a bulge on the face of the blanket engages the plate and forces it against the rubber seat 8. The register means for the plate comprises fixed blocks 21-24 against which two edges of the plate are forced by spring-pressed blocks 25-28 engaging the other two edges. The frame is also provided with register pins 30, or 34, Fig. 5, which enter sockets in the blanket. Register lugs 31, which may be thin' metal strips, engage over these pins and are attached by adhesive to the sheet of carbon tissue under the pressure of the blanket during printing. These lugs serve to register the carbon tissue on the cylinder to be etched, the cylinder carrying a bar provided with pins which engage them.
