Abstract

420,310. Trimming stereotypes. HOWELL, A. H., 211, Queens Road, Wimbledon, London. June 2, 1933, No. 16092. [Class 100 (ii)] The overlay of resilient material employed in the shaving of the backs of curved stereotypes which are formed with printing- areas at different levels to accord with the varying depths of impression desired is retained in the shaving-arch independently of the stereotype so that it can remain in operative position during the shaving of a series of plates. Preferably, suction means is employed, and for this purpose apertures 4, Fig. 2, are formed in the arch and are connected to a pipe 6 in communication with a vacuum apparatus. A valve 9 is hinged to the pipe 6 to enable the system to be opened to the atmosphere when required. A ball valve is provided in each aperture to close the connection to the vacuum apparatus if the aperture is open to the atmosphere within the arch. To facilitate the positioning of the overlay in the arch, a dummy plate 10, Fig. 3, corresponding substantially in form to the plates to be shaved is used, the dummy plate being provided with register marks and with retractible pins 11, 12 to enable the overlay 18 to be correctly positioned. A stop 17 on the plate 10 acts to determine the longitudinal position in the arch. If the lifting-apparatus acts to raise one side of a plate into position first, the plate 10 is provided with a flange 19 covered with resilient material 20 against which the overlay is bent. When this is raised into position, it presses against the flat undersurface 21, Fig. 2, of the arch from which pins 22 project to retain the overlay during the raising of the opposite edge of the plate. To assist this action some of the holes 4 may be located near to the pins 22.
