Abstract
528,940. Electric selective signalling. PRICE, D. R., and METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 17, 1939, No. 14775. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVII] Operation of a relay is effected by the reduction of permeability of an armature when heated by a heating coil, and the heating coil is itself controlled by a frequency responsive relay energized by the superimposition of a ripple of predetermined frequency on a supply system. In the form shown, a contact-carrying member 1 formed of Jae metal has two portions 5, 6 forming armatures attracted respectively by permanent magnets 3, 4. When current passes through a heater 9, the loss of permeability of the armature allows the magnet 3 to rotate the member 1 about its axis 2 to close contacts 10, 11. The return movement is effected by passing current through a heater 8. The heaters 8, 9 are selectively energized by selectively operating one or other of two frequencyresponsive relays 12, 13 of the type described in Specification 517,971, [Group XXXVII], thereby removing a short-circuit from the appropriate heater.
