Abstract

257,594. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Hodgkins, C. H.). Aug. 25, 1925, [Convention date]. Electricallytripped switches.- An electromagnetic switch suitable for controlling electric motors has auxiliary contacts which are allowed to operate by the bending of a bimetallic member 15 a predetermined time after the winding 23 has been energized. Energization of the winding 23 by an alternating current first causes the attraction of an armature 2 pivoted at 3 to a. switch arm 4 pivoted at 5, causing the main contacts 6, 7 to close. The other end 11 of the arm 4 also moves but the contact-pin 9 resiliently carried by it is prevented from moving into bridging engagement with two pins 14 till the bimetallic member 15 has bent to the right under the heating effect of current produced inductively in a winding 22 on the core 1 of the electromagnet. The element 15 is of the shape shown in Fig. 2, having a large radiating surface to ensure quick cooling, and narrow portions 20, 21 which become hot quickly and so ensure quick bending. In a modification, the movement of the contactpin 9 may also break the circuit of the winding 22, so that the element 15 cools at once and latches the contact-pin 9 again as soon as the winding 23 is de-energized and the arm 4 moves back.
