Abstract

612,656. Switching systems. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and ROSEBY, P. N. May 29, 1946, No. 16281. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In a combined electromagnetic and thermal device, contacts 32, 33, 34 are actuated for a period of time during which a thermal element heats up and cools down. On closing a contact device (not shown) between leads 43, 44 Fig. 3, circuit is completed from a source S through the relay coil 15 and the heating winding 25 of a bimetallic strip. The armature 18 is immediately attracted and by bearing on a roller 23 moves a strip 21 into engagement with a strip 22, thereby completing a maintaining circuit for the coil 15 and winding 25. The bimetallic strip 22 is also moved so as to operate the contact 33 by means of a buffer 31. The bimetallic strip is now heated and bends to the right till after a time the strips 21, 22 separate breaking the circuit of the electromagnet and the heater 25 so that the armature immediately returns to its original position and the bimetallic strip 22 bends back slowly, restoring the contacts 32, 33, 34 when it has reached its original position. The invention may be applied to the signalling system disclosed in Specification 593,378, [Group XXXVII], a preliminary signal of superposed high-frequency current initiating the operation and the switch 33 serving to open the initiating circuit and to connect up equipment for responding to the main signal during the delay period.
