Abstract
557,024. Automatic temperature control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 27, 1942, No. 10465. Convention date, July 29, 1941. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A system of controlling the heating of an electric iron for example, includes a thermal switch 16, in series with the heating element 12 and with a safety switch 35 in the handle, the latter being operable by movement of a pivoted handle 43 either manually or by resting the iron upright on projections 31 on the body and 51 on the handle. Means are provided for maintaining the switch 35 closed independent of the manual operation, but responsive to a condition influenced by the state of the thermal switch, either open or closed. The thermal switch includes a bimetal strip 17, which bends under heat from the iron to separate contacts 23. The contactbearing strip 38 of the switch 35 is also made of bimetal adapted to close the contacts 36 by the heating effect of current passing therethrough. Thus, after an initial closure by hand for a few seconds current is maintained through the thermal switch until the desired temperature is reached, when the current is cut off, opening switch 35 unless it is being held closed.
