Abstract

686,687. Electromagnetic switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 8, 1950 [Feb. 22, 1949], No. 3264/50. Class 38 (v) [Also in Group XXXV] An electromagnetic switch has shunts for diverting part of the flux produced by a permanent magnet or D.C. coil from the armature when A.C. or pulsating current fed coils on the shunts are unexcited, energisation of the latter setting up flux which saturates one shunt and assists the flux from the magnet flowing through the armature. As shown, when the A.C. coils are not energised both shunts 7, 8 divert some of the flux of magnet 1 from the armature 6. Flux produced in shunt 7 when its coil is energised from A.C. source 9 augments the magnet flux thus saturating this shunt while that in shunt 8 opposes the flow of magnet flux therethrough but augments that through the armature and ensures that it is unidirectional. Fig. 3 shows an alternative arrangement of the shunts and these may be interchanged in position with the magnet 1. Short circuited coils may be placed about the core members shown vertically, between the pole pieces 4 and the shunts and between the shunts and the magnet 1.
