Abstract

526,991. Valves. BAINBRIDGE, G. A. March 31, 1939, Nos. 10052 and 24574. [Class 135] A valve device for insertion in a line of hose pipe is provided with means to release the pressure between the valve and pumping engine when the main conduit is closed and so facilitate uncoupling. In the form shown in the Figure the plug has a main passage 28 and a relief passage 29 and is integral with a short operating stem 31 formed with two square sockets at right angles adapted to receive the curved prong of a fireman's axe. When the main passage is closed in one direction the relief passage connects the upstream side of the valve with an aperture in a cover plate 27 leading to the atmosphere. Inlet pressure is admitted through a passage 27<SP>1</SP> to a chamber beneath the small end of the plug and a leather washer 33 gripped between the casing and cover plate rests on the larger end of the plug surrounding the spindle 31. This washer is backed by a brass washer 34 and spring washer 35. In a modification the relief passage is omitted from the plug and a separately actuated relief valve fitted. According to first Provisional Specification the plug may have oppositely projecting spindles each provided with a square socket.
