Abstract

526,434. Turning-gear. CRILEY, W. C. March 15, 1939, No. 8336. Convention date, March 31, 1938. [Class 7 (v)] An engine starter comprises means for storing further energy in a normally compressed gas and means for releasing the further energy and transmitting it through an incompressible fluid to a part which is held against movement while the energy is being stored. In the form shown, a body of liquid is maintained between pistons 2, 8, 29 in communicating cylinders 1, 7, 27. The starter piston 8 is urged to the left by a spring 22 and is normally held against movement to the right by a detent 23 carried by a rotatable shaft 25. The cylinder 27 contains at the right-hand end gas which is normally compressed and which can be further compressed by rotation of a screw 3 forcing the pump piston 2 to the right-hand end of the cylinder 1. When a sufficient pressure is reached, a spring-loaded piston in a cylinder acts through a rod 37 and lever 45 to engage a pinion 10 with a rack 9 on the starter piston 8 and to bring into engagement a starter clutch 15. The detent 23 is also released by means of a lever 41 and the starter piston 8 is actuated by the gas pressure in the cylinder 27 and drives the engine shaft 17 through the rack and pinion 9, 10 and the clutch 15. If the piston in the cylinder 35 is removed or the rod 37 disconnected, the lever 45 can be operated manually through a cable.
