Abstract
187,192. Gray, W. April 16, 1921. Machine guns.-A gasactuated and spring- released safety device to prevent operation of the gun should a missfire occur, comprises a longitudinally-slidable rod 55 adapted at its rear end to enter a recess 59, Fig. 2, in a plate 60 mounted on the spindle 29 of the gun-actuating handle 31. The device is shown in central section in Fig. 2, and in part sectional plan in Fig. 3, as applied to a doublebarrel gun. At its front end the rod passes into a cylinder 51<a>, disposed between the two barrels 23 and in communication therewith by gas ports 51, and is provided with a piston 54. A spring 56 tends to push the rod 55 rearwards. When the gun is firing normally, the gas pressure in the cylinder 51a holds the rod out of engagement with the recess 59, but if a missfire occurs, the spring drives the rod into the recess 59 and stops the mechanism.
