Abstract
525,281. Pneumatic hammers. FRANKFURTER MASCHINENBAU - AKT. - GES. VORM. POKORNY & WITTEKIND. Feb. 16, 1939, No. 5204. Convention date, Feb. 16, 1938. [Class 124] A pneumatic hammer for single stroke operation is provided with a piston 3 which strikes a spring pressed tool 5 under the action of compressed air on its end surface 7 and is returned under the action of compressed air acting on the end surface 4. At the end of the return stroke compressed air is admitted to the surface 7 of the piston which is partly masked by engaging the end 8a of a socket piece 8. The unequal pressure on the two sides of the piston due to the difference of surface exposed to pressure maintains the piston ready for forward propulsion when the pressure is relieved from its forward surface. To effect this a spring pressed valve 10 is moved longitudinally by a lever 13 from the position shown to one in which connection is established between a compressed air supply at 16 and a channel 35 leading to the end of a spring pressed valve 18 which is forced back to allow air to escape from a chamber 1 through ports 22 and 23 and thence to the atmosphere.
