Abstract

525,853. Vehicle brakes. BENDIX, Ltd., and IRVING, J. S. March 2, 1939, No. 6799. [Class 103 (i)] In a brake for a steered wheel in which a wedge, plunger &c. shoe-actuating means is movable in a direction at right angles to the back plate, an extension of the shoe-actuating means extends into a member swivelling about an axis in alignment with the king pin and is operated by a sliding member which is guided in the swivelling member and is pivoted to operating means, the pivot being substantially in alignment with the axis of the swivelling member when the brake is applied; the brake may also be applied hydraulically. The shoes are separated by the movement of the rod 18 the end 19 of which is connected to a sleeve 20 pivoted at 30 to a bifurcated fitting 29 on a cable 28. The sleeve 20 is guided in a cylindrical member 15 fitted with spherical members 13 swivelling in a housing 17, the pivot 30 being in alignment with the axis when the brake is applied. as shown. The cylinder 15 contains a piston 22 by which the brake can be applied, pressure fluid being admitted at 25.
