Abstract

878,318. Hydraulic brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Feb. 26, 1958 [March 28, 1957], No. 10119/57. Class 103 (1). A master-cylinder having alternative means for operating an hydraulic brake system, comprises a plunger 7 movable initially to close port 39 in housing 1 to a sump 5 to cause pressure build-up in sleeve 38 connected to pump 15 through connection 14 to give the operator " feel " and apply the rear brakes 19 through banjo coupling 17 and pipe 18, the pressure also moving piston 20 against spring 35 to release its pull on a valve 25, 26 which is then moved by spring 28 to close the connection 3 to reservoir 4, movement of piston 20 compresses fluid to its right to apply the front brakes 13 through connection 11. Should the pump 15 fail then plunger 7 moves piston 20 through its stem 21 to apply the brakes 13, the valve 25, 26 sliding in bore 34 in a piston extension 23 on movement of piston 20. On release of pressure on plunger 7 the master cylinder is returned to the normal arrangement shown, by springs 28, 35 and 44.
