Abstract

525,621. Carbon black. SOC. ITALIANA PIRELLI. Feb. 23, 1939, No. 6099. Convention date, Feb. 25, 1938. [Class 90] In an impingement process for the manufacture of carbon black, of the type in which a mixture of a combustible gas with the vapour of a substance having a relatively high carbon content, such as naphthalene anthracene &c., is burnt at a burner and the carbon produced collected on a cooled surface, the combustible gas employed is water gas or a gas having a like high percentage of carbon monoxide, the mixture employed has a gas : vapour ratio of 1.5 to 2.5 cubic metres of gas to 1 kilogram of vapour and the said mixture is a simple mixture not containing material amounts of other constituents such as air or oxygen. The piping for conveying the gas vapour mixture is of stainless steel and the burners are of brass or phosphor bronze having parallel-sided slits of a width of between 0.2 and 0.75 mm. Water gas and generator gas are the gases preferably employed and the vapour that of anthracene. Specification 500,467 is referred to.
