Abstract
<PICT:0461497/III/1> Carbon black is obtained by the partial combustion of finely divided streaming carbonaceous substances, e.g. gases, vapours, mists &c. by passing a mixture of the carbonaceous substance and a suitable oxidizing gas in a substantially non-turbulent current from a burner into a substantially closed chamber in which the flame develops without restriction. Substances such as acetylene, methane, benzene, napthalene, anthracene and various hydrocarbon gas mixtures may be burnt with oxygen, air or chlorine. Hydrogen may also be added to the combustible mixture. The outflow velocity is preferably 10--20 per cent above that at which the flame strikes back: the combustible mixture may be preheated thus reducing the amount of oxygen required. The flame temperature is preferably kept below 1500 DEG C. and preferably below 1300 DEG C. Byeproducts in the carbon black may be removed by means of solvents or by supplying outside the flame, an additional amount of an oxidizing gas, e.g. oxygen, air, steam or carbon dioxide. In the arrangement shown, the combustible gas mixture is led through a smooth burner tube 3 and an auxiliary gas, when used, is fed to the annular tube 8, preferably below the level of the flame. The walls of the chamber 2 may be trickled with water from conduit 9: this prevents deposition of carbon on the walls and is stated to improve the quality and yield. Numerous detailed examples are given. The product may be used for the preparation of dry cells or as a filler for rubber. Specification 317,165, [Class 90], is referred to.
