Abstract

525,179. Universal joints. RICEFIELD, L. Feb. 17, 1939, No. 5312. [Class 80 (ii)] A coupling for providing universal movement between two shafts comprises members 10 and 11 secured to the shafts 13, 14 and each carrying a plurality of jaws 10a, 11a which intermesh loosely with each other through the medium of blocks 15 of resilient material such as rubber. The jaws 10a, 11a of the two members 10, 11 are formed on rings 10f, 11f respectively which are secured to the members 10, 11. The ring 11f is shown as detachably secured by bolts 18 which can be unscrewed to disconnect the joint, the ring 11f being temporarily secured to the opposite member 10 by passing the bolts through holes 10j provided therein to engage the threaded holes in the ring 11f. The shafts 13, 14 can then be moved away laterally from one another. The portion 10c of the member 10 has an annular ridge 10d co-operating with the interior surface of the jaws on member 11 to maintain the relative disposition of the parts. Radial outward movement of the members 15 is prevented by an annular retaining member 16 formed preferably as a plurality of superimposed layers of a spiral steel winding. In a modification, one series of jaws are formed integrally with the body portion of one coupling member and a detachable hub portion is provided which is welded or otherwise secured to the body portion of the coupling member after the machining of the jaws and the adjacent part has been effected.
