Abstract
523,836. Hydraulic couplings. MUIR, N. S., CLOTHIER, W. C., and WHITAKER, J. H. Jan. 16, 1939, No. 1389. [Class 69 (ii)] In pumping apparatus a delivery pump is operated by a supply pump which delivers part of the fluid supplied by the delivery pump to the driving turbine or the like of the delivery pump, the said turbine and pump being mounted on a common rotor. As applied to means for supplying fuel oil to the carburettor A', Fig. 1, of the engine A of an aeroplane, a centrifugal delivery pump D, which has pipe connections with the reservoir B and the rotor of which is formed with turbine vanes E, is driven by the turbine which is supplied with fluid under high pressure by a pump K driven by the engine A. The pump and turbine have a common outlet leading to a pipe G and thence to a small reservoir H which supplies the carburettor A<SP>1</SP> and also the pump K, and the relation of the tank B to the pump causes air entrained in the oil to be released. A priming pump M, a fuel flow meter N, and a pressure-reducing valve P are arranged in the fuel circuit. A non-return valve may be arranged in the pipe L. The pipes L, G and associated parts may be duplicated so that if one set is put out of action another set may be employed. In a lubricating system, Fig. 4, oil is supplied from a tank U by a rotary pump in a casing V to a pipe T<SP>2</SP> leading to a gear pump T, which delivers part of its output to drive a turbine in the casing V, this turbine and the pump being on a common rotor.
