- An object of the present invention is to provide a housing which is formed in two sections joined by a suitable separable union, in one of which sections is located the hand-operated pump with a fuel supply well therefor and in the other of which sections is located a power-operated pump and pressure control means therefor and wherein a passage is formed leading from the well in one section directly through the union to the other section and the intake of the power-operated pump, and a separate and independent passage is provided through the union directly connecting the outlet of the two pumps.

2 Claims.
In my prior application, Serial No. 85,358, filed June 15, 1936, there is shown, described and claimed a fuel distributing unit which includes 'a self-contained, hand-operated fuel pump and self-contained power-operated fuel pump, which pumps are detachably and directly connected to each other so that the pumps may be separately manufactured and assembled in a unit without Lillie use of intervening connecting pipes or the The present invention relatesto an improvement in the fuel distributing unit of my prior application.
An object of the present invention is to provide a housing which is formed in two sections joined by a suitable separable union, in one of which sections is located the hand-operated pump with a fuel supply well therefor and in the other of which sections is located a power-operated pump and pressure control means therefor and wherein a passage is formed leading from the well in one section directly through the union to the other section and the intake of the power-operated pump, and a separate and independent passage is provided through the union directly connecting the outlet of the two pumps. Another object of the invention is to provide a check valve between the power -operatedpump unit and the unit which contains the strainer, to serve as a check while the hand-operated pump is in use, thereby promoting the efficiency of the latter. This valve is located at the Junction between the two units or sections of the housing in order to facilitate its installation.
The novel features of the invention and the advantages resulting therefrom will be more par ticularly explained with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of the unit which constitutes the subject matter of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line unit l4 which is directly secured to the housing III by a flange coupling l5. This selector unit has any desired number of inlets i 6 adapted to be connected to a like number of fuel supply tanks and is provided with a selector valve II which is secured to a spindle l8 and which may be rotatably adjusted to uncover any selected one of the inlets. After passing through the strainer II, the fuel is delivered, either by a hand-operated pump I! or by a power-operated pump 20, through an outlet 2| which is adapted to be connected by a suitable pipe line to the carburetor of the engine.
The hand-operated pump l 9 is contained in the housing l and comprises a shaft 22 with vanes 23 secured thereto and engaging the cylinder liner 24. When the shaft. 22 is oscillated by means a hand crank 25 secured to its outer end, fuel is drawn into the cylinder through an inlet 26 past the inlet check valves 21 and forced past It is forced from the cylinder 34 through an outlet 40 into a chamber 4| and thence through a port 42 and the outlet 2i.
The chamber 4| is also provided with a relief port 43 controlled by a relief valve 44. which is acted upon by a spring 45 housed within a sylphon bellows 46. The tension of the spring 45 may be adjusted by means of a screw-threaded stem 41,
which engages the spring seat 48.
-It will be noted that the hand-operated pump l3 and the strainer I! are contained in the housing III, while the power-operated pump 20 and the pressure control unit, including the relief valve 44, are contained in the housing 30, which is removably secured to the housing III by a flange union 49. The inlet check valve 31 to the poweroperated pump is mounted in ears located on the housing ID at the point where the latter engages the inlet to the chamber 38.
It will be noted that the fuel distributing device comprises two complete and separate units.
- One unit includes the power+operated pumpand the relief valve. The other unit comprises the hand-operated pump and the strainer. The powthe outlet check valves 28 and through the outa er-operated pump, with its accessories, is the unit which is most apt to need replacement or repair and the division of the housing into two separate sections along the line indicated per- 0 The division of the housing also permits the ready introduction of the check valve 31 between the passageway 36 and the chamber 38. Due to this introduction of the valve 31 in the suction line, the power-operated fuel pump does not have to serve as a check for the hand-operated pump, and the operation of the latter is more eflicie'nt.
While I have shown and described the adaptation of the invention to a specific type of fuel distributing unit, it is to be understood that this is for the purpose of illustration only and that the invention also includes all such modifications as may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a fuel distributing device, a housing formed in two sections joined by a suitable union,
a hand-operated pump and a fuel supply well therefor in one of said sections, a power-operated pump and pressure control means therefor in the other of said sections, an independent passage leading from said well directly through the union to the power-operated pump, a check valve in said passage at the juncture between the two sections, and an independent passage through said union directly connecting the outlets of the two pumps.
2. In a fuel distributing device, a housing formed in two sections joined by a suitable union, a hand-operated pump and a fuel supply well therefor in one of said sections, a poweroperated pump and pressure control means therefor in the other of said sections, an independent passage leading from said well directly through the union to the power-operated pump, a check valve in said passage at the juncture between the two sections, said pressure control means having an outlet into said passage between said check valve and the power-operated pump, and an independent passage through said union directly connecting the outlets of the two pumps.
