Sims, Beeville, Tex. Application June 1, 1936, Serial No. 82,945
3 Claims.
This invention relates to water treating plants and has for the primary object the provision of a self-powered automatic device of the above stated character which will introduce treating liquid into a water main proportionately to the water taken from the main and which will thoroughly mix the treating liquid with the water.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, illustrating a self-powered automatic water treating plant constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation partly in section showing the opposite side of the device from that shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view partly in section showing the device.
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary elevational view- 30 showing the arrangement of the pumps and the connection therebetween.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral l indicates a support on which is mounted a casing 2. Operating within the casing 2 is a water wheel 3 of conventional construction and is secured to a shaft 4 extending through one of the sides of the casing and is rotatably supported thereby.
Pipes 5 and 6 extend through one of the end walls of the casing and are connected to each other exteriorly of the casing and to a water main 1 by a coupling 8. The pipes 5 and 6 are arranged in superimposed relation and the pipe 5 has connected thereto a nozzle 9 provided with a comparatively small discharge orifice. The nozzle 9 directs water into the pockets or against the fins of the water wheel. A relief valve In is secured to the pipe 6 and is of a conventional construction and located within the casing, the outlet of which is indicated by the character H. The outlet II has a nozzle l2 connected thereto. The orifice of the nozzle I2 is considerably larger than the orifice of the nozzle 9. The nozzle I2 directs water against the fins or pockets of the Water wheel when'the relief valve I opens. An outlet main I4 is connected to the casing having a conventional type of control valve '(not shown) whereby the water in the main 1 may be disposed as desired.
A bracket is located adjacent one side of the casing 2 and forms a guide l6 for a cross head I! and also provides a support for a pump cylinder H. The bracket I5 is secured to a gear housing l8 mounted on the base of the device. Operating within the gear housing I8 '10 are reduction gears l9, one of the shafts thereof being indicated by the character 29 and is connected to the shaft 4 by a coupling 2|. Another one of the shafts of the reduction gearing is indicated by the character 22 and has secured thereto a fly wheel 23. A pitman 24 is eccentrically pivoted to the fly wheel and is pivoted to the cross head ll. A pump plunger 24 is secured to the cross head and extends into the pump cylinder ll, completing a positive force pump indicated generally by the character A. A stufiing gland 25 is provided between the pump cylinder H and the plunger 24. The pump cylinder is provided with inlet and outlet pipes 26 and 2 1 to which are connected check valve 28. The check valve 28 of the outlet pipe has connected thereto a pipe 28 which is in turn connected to the water supply pipe 7 adjacent to the coupling 8. The check valve 28 of the inlet pipe has connected thereto a pipe 29 which 1 is connected to an outlet of a pump B. The pipe 29 has located therein a sight gauge 29. The pump B includes a cylinder 30 supported by the bracket I5 and paralleling the cylinder of the pump A and operating in the cylinder .135 30 is a plunger 3! terminating in a screw threaded stem 32. The screw threaded stem 32 is operated by a bracket 33 secured to the cross head I! so that the pumps A and B operate in unison. The inlet of the pump B has connected thereto a flexible hose 34 adapted to be inserted in water treating liquid of a container 35. This container is of a type employed for shipping the water treating liquid from the manufacturer. The inlets and outlets of the pump B have check valves therein. The pump B acts as a measuring medium and furnishes to the pump A a measured amount of liquid during each reciprocation of its plunger 3|. The stroke of the plunger 3| may be varied by adjusting the stem thereof in the bracket 33 thereby permitting the measured amounts dispensed by the pump B to be varied. The sight gauge permits the operator to readily determine the flow of treating liquid from the measuring pump to the pump A. The pump A V forces the measured treating liquid into the water main against the pressure of water therein. The relief valve I is of the self-seating type hand also the back pressure of the water within rotates the latter. The rotatio'n of the water.
,the casing aids in seating this valve having communication therewith by way of the nozzle l2.
In operation, when. the control valve of the outlet main I4 is closed the pressure of water within the casing is equal to the pressure of the Water within the main 1, this being accomplished by thenozzle 9 feeding water from the main 1 into the casingf As soon as the controlrvalve is' cracked or slightly opened to permit water to:v
escape from the casing 2 the casing is-f edwith water from the main 1 by way of the nozzle 9. The water impinging against the water wheel wheel operates the pump which draws the treatdecreases in the casing 2 and the pressure in the, water. main overcomes the'action' of the relief ing liquid from the container and introduces the same into the main 1. As the control .'valve of the outlet main is further opened the pressure valve Ill and permits, water to be fed into the casing both by thenozzle' l2 and the nozzle 9 rotating the water wheel at a fasterrate of speed, I
"consequently operating the pumps'faster so as to increase the amount of treating liquid introduced into the water in'the water mainl. Ifhus it will be seen that the treating liquid'is introduced into the water of the water main 1, proportionately to 7 the amount of water taken or, allowed to escape from the outlet main. The rotation of the water wheel within the casing agitates the water and treatingliquid so that they thoroughly corn- ,mingle before passing from the casing byway of the outlet main, V
A water treating plant of the character described'will operate and treat the water'regardless of whether a large or small stream is being pass 'edthrough it, and also whereit is necessary to-treat the water With as many as three dif' ferent chemicals, as many as three different" pumps can be geared to one water motor. The one'water: motor having the power to drive the three pumpswithout inserting a booster pump inthe line to build up the water pressure. The
pump has a single acting, piston which does not I require packing, therefore; no internal packing trouble. I c
have herein shown'and described but one specific embodiment of the invention changes'in form, construction and method of application and op- :eration may be made within the scope of the appended claims. M Having described the invention, I claim:
V '1. A water treating plant comprising a casing, va water wheel mounted insaid casing, a'con- 7 water supply pipe.
It is to, be understood, of course, that while I plungers.
