966,240. Centrifugal pumps; steam turbines. G. & J. WEIR Ltd. Dec. 18,1962 [Nov. 21, 1961], No. 41551/61. Headings F1C and F1T. A steam turbine-driven centrifugal pump 11, such as a boiler feed pump, having at least one impeller comprises a driving shaft 12 common to both the turbine 10 and impeller, a first bearing 13 for the shaft located adjacent the turbine and arranged to absorb residual thrust from the pump and the turbine, a second bearing 14 for the shaft interposed between the turbine and the suction of the pump, means for lubricating the second bearing 14 with fluid being pumped, and means for causing fluid lubricating the second bearing to flow to mix with exhaust steam from the turbine. A third bearing 21 is provided adjacent the second stage of the pump and is also lubricated by the fluid pumped. A boost pump 19 supplies water to the pump 11 at a pressure greater than the steam exhausted at 17 from the turbine 10, so that the water flows through the bearing 14, passage 15 and conduit 16 to the turbine outlet 17. Water passing through the bearing 21 passes to the turbine outlet 17 through a passage 22 and a conduit 23. The bearing 13 is oil lubricated.
