Abstract
523,485. Metal-vapour apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Jan. 6, 1939, No. 551. Convention date, Jan. 7, 1938. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] An apparatus with a mercury cathode is provided with two anodes, one of which is perforated, the discharge to the second anode passing through the perforation ; it is stated that while a discharge is passing to the perforated anode the discharge to the second anode maintains the same voltage for different current strengths up to a certain current value, after which the current remains substantially constant for all voltages, but becomes intermittent above a certain voltage ; if the discharge to the perforated anode is then stopped the discharge to the second anode is permanently interrupted. If a coil is arranged to produce a field parallel to the discharge the limiting value of the current is lowered and a sufficiently strong field will break the current. The effect of the coil is enhanced if a deflector, preferably of magnetic material, is placed between the cathode and the opening in the perforated anode. Two coils may be employed in opposition so that if the current in either is interrupted the current in the other stops the discharge, and applications of this arrangement to overload interrupters are described. The apparatus may contain a succession of perforated anodes, the discharge to each being regulated by those to the previous ones. Several constructions are described, including arrangements of two non-perforated anodes for use as a full-wave rectifier. Specifications 404,455 and 440,636 are referred to.
