Abstract

523,033. Forced - feed lubrication systems. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and OWNER, F. M. Dec. 22, 1938, No. 37337. [Class 12 (iii)] A spring-pressed release valve 28 normally limits the pressure at which a pump 15 supplies lubricating oil from a tank 17 to an internal combustion engine to say 801bs, per square inch but when the oil is cold a capsule 34 containing an expansible fluid and arranged in a chamber 33 connected to the fuel inlet conduit operates a piston valve 22 to allow the oil under pressure to pass by a conduit 38 to the top of the valve 28 and render it inoperative. As excessive pressure, say about 200 lbs. per square inch in the lubrication system is then prevented by a spring- pressed valve 40 connected to the inlet of the scavenge pump 16. Fig. 2 shows a preferred embodiment in which the capsule 34 operates the valve 22 in a ported sleeve 21 to connect a port 66 leading from the spring space of the normal pressure release valve 58 to the pump delivery chamber 45 when the engine is cold and to the capsule chamber 33 when the engine is hot. When the valve 58 is operated it opens ports 61 in a surrounding sleeve 59 to allow the oil to escape to the chamber 33. Passages 69, 70 in the valve 22 prevent the development of high pressure or vacuum on the left side of the valve 22. The capsule is preferably spring- biassed to its expanded position.
