[Group 82 (ii)] [Also in Groups XL and' XXXVI] In a method of producing selenium rectifiers and photo-cells, the selenium, during its conversion into the crystalline form, is maintained, without the use of pressure, in surface contact over its entire surface with a material which does not enter into solution or into a chemical compound with the selenium. The amorphous selenium may be applied in a finely comminuted condition to a metal plate, fused, and cooled slowly. The contacting surface employed to ensure an even formation of the crystals may be applied to the selenium at the outset if it is a sheet of metal, mica, etc., but if a liquid e.g. paraffin, it may be applied after the selenium has commenced to fuse. The plate preferably has a raised edge to prevent liquid running off. In another embodiment the amorphous selenium may be first fused on to a foil e.g. of aluminium, preferably at a temperature below the fusing point of crystalline selenium, the foil then being applied to the supporting electrode with the selenium downwards, the supporting electrode also being at a temperature below that fusing point. The foil is readily stripped off either after the forming or after the selenium has been allowed to cool.
