In the Bayer process for obtaining sodium aluminate from bauxite the separation of the ferruginous "red mud" from the solution of sodium aluminate is assisted by the addition of a starchy or farinaceous substance to the suspension. The starch is gelatinized by alkali which may conveniently consist of a portion of the clarified solution.
