[Also in Divisions C3 and C6] A high viscosity gum, prepared by the interreaction of dextran and an alkali metal salt of a phosphorus oxy-acid (see Division C3) is used as a flocculation aid for (a) settling " red mud " from aluminate solutions in the processing of bauxite and (b) settling kaolin from a suspension in neutral CaCI 2 solution.
