Abstract
522,439. Pressure gauges. UHDE, F. Dec. 8, 1938, No. 35832. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1937. [Class 106 (ii)] The instrument is intended for measuring very high pressures and comprises a rod-shaped body 1 having a straight axis, strong walls restricting lateral expansion, and a boring 2 concentric or eccentric to its axis to which the pressure fluid is admitted, the movement of the end of the body under the internal pressure being the basis for measurement. In Fig. 1, the base 2 is eccentric to the axis. The rod is strengthened by having a series of rings 3 shrunk on to it. The rod is enclosed in a casing 4 with an opening through which passes a bracket fixed to the end of the rod and carrying a mirror 6 which tilts when the rod bends under the strain. In a modification the base is concentric with the axis and the elongation of the rod, measured by a dial gauge is the basis of measurement. Instead of rings, relatively thin walls may be reinforced by a wire winding to prevent lateral expansion.
