Abstract

522,023. Lasting machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Dec. 2, 1938, No. 35096. [Class 17 (i)] Relates to flexible clamping means for the heel band in heel end lasting machines of the kind described in Specification 473,197. The heel band 4 is backed by a chain-like clamping device comprising blocks pivoted together, the pivots being farther from the band at the corners of the last for increasing the pressure at these points. The mechanism is arranged to move the ends of the clamp forward as they close on the shoe and the whole clamping means may move fowardly, in response to the action of the wipers, to prevent lessening of clamping pressure. The chain comprises a central block 24, intermediate blocks and end blocks all pivoted together, the last two blocks at each end being carried. by a link 40 pivoted to one arm of a bell-crank lever 48 pivoted to an arm 52 pivoted to a slide 78 urged rearwardly by a weak spring 96. The other arm of the bell-crank lever is linked to a bell-crank lever 14 actuated by a rack as described in the prior Specification. The end blocks may be in two parts pivoted together by a horizontal pivot. The band 4 is carried by the central block and the ends of the arms 52.
