[Class 17 (i).] Pulling-over machines of the kind having wiping devices operating at the sides of the forepart are provided with other wiping devices for engaging the upper margin just toeward of the waist portion and operating before the first mentioned wipers, for preventing these crowding loose upper material into the waist portion of the shoe. As applied to machines of the kind described in Specifications 16398/15, 150,424, [both in Class 17 (ii)], and 396,086, wherein the shoe is positioned bottom downward, and in which five grippers, means for inserting seven tacks, yieldable wipers carried by the forward tackholders and self-adjusting rubber pads 15, 17 for clamping the upper against the last at the conclusion of the updraw are provided, the clamping pads are carried by arms 11, one at each side of the last, on substantially horizontal pivots 13, the pads being arranged to press the tensioned upper against the last in the neighbourhood of the toe cap line before the grippers release the upper. The rear side of the arm 11 carries a pivot 35 for a guide 37 engaging an extension 41 of a wiper 39, the wiper being urged away from the shoe by a spring 45 and toward the shoe by a spring plunger 49 engaging an ear on the wiper and carried by an arm 53 generally similar to the arm 11 and pivoted on the same pivot 13. The two levers 53 are operated by a face cam 63, and each is provided with an arm 67 carrying a member 69 abutting against the end of a strong spring 73 housed in a tubular guideway formed on the arm 11, the arrangement providing a yielding coupling between the arms 11, 53. Each of the wipers 39 is urged about the pivot 35 toward the shoe by a plunger 75 backed by a spring adjustable in strength by a lever 79 having at its pivoted end three flat faces at different distances from the pivot. An adjustable stop 81 limits the movement produced by the plunger 75. Each side tacker arm carries a small yielding wiper 85. The toe end tacker arm carries the usual yielding wiper 27 and a soft rubber stop 29 limiting the forward movement of the arm. Simplified mechanism is described wherein the auxiliary wipers 39 are actuated by spring means carried directly by the clamping arms and these arms are actuated by a spring-actuated rack bar.
