Abstract

425,305. Boot - making machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., BARCLAY, W. R., and BARTON, F., Belgrave Road, Leicester, and GREWCOCK, H., 138, Bramley Road, North Kensington, London. Sept. 6, 1933, Nos. 24661 and 32159. [Class 17 (i)] Heels, machines for.-In a machine for attaching very high heels to shoes, the clamp has a tread member carried by a lever pivoted so that as the member engages the tread face it is moving substantially at right-angles to it, and the tread member is locked against further movement while side and rear clamps move to engage the heel. A plunger 14 descends vertically, e.g. as described in Specification 23031/11, [Class 17 (i)], to cause the heel to be clamped. The plunger carries mechanism of the kind described in Specification 339,935, [Class 17 (i)], for operating side and rear clamps comprising a compensating lever 20 engaging plungers 16, 31 for the tread and rear clamps, respectively, the lever having a pivot constituted by the ends 24 of levers geared to side clamps 26. The tread clamp 18 is angularly adjustable by a worm 33 in a slide adjustable along levers 32 which may engage any one of three pivot holes 36-38 in a member carried by the machine column 10. The other ends of the levers are connected by a link 48 with a slide 50 urged upwardly by a spring 44 and provided with teeth co-operating with pawls 54, 56, four pawls providing engagement at quarter-tooth intervals. The tails of the pawls are engaged by arms 64 secured to the levers operating the side clamps, these arms being urged towards each other by a spring 62. The plunger 16 is rotatable by a hand-wheel 45 and has threaded engagement with a stem 43 carrying an abutment 42 for the tread face clamp. The rear clamp is adjustable longitudinally of the shoe by a hand-wheel 29. In operation, when the shoe has been positioned on the jack the plunger 14 is depressed, tipping the levers 32 downwardly and carrying the slide 50 down until the resistance to further descent of the tread and rear clamps causes the lever 20 to swing the side clamps toward the heel. As these commence to swing, the arms 64 leave the tails of the pawls 54, 56 and one of these pawls engages a tooth of the slide 50 and prevents further descent of the levers 32 and, consequently, further clamping movement of the tread rest. Further descent of the plunger causes the rear and side clamps to engage the heel more firmly. When the heel attaching nails have been driven, rise of the plunger 14 returns all parts to starting position. Specification 174,273, [Class 17 (i)], also is referred to.
