Abstract

380,481. Boot-making machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. and BARTON, F., Union Works, Belgrave Road, Leicester. June 16, 1931, No. 17429. [Class 17 (i).] Heel seats, forming.-Relates to machines for severing marginal portions from the heel ends of soles, and consists in improvements in the kind of machine described in Specification 305,276, [Class 17 (i), Boots and shoes, Apparatus for making &c.], wherein a worksupporting plunger forces the heel end of a sole upwardly against an opening somewhat smaller than the heel end in a table of the machine, a trimming knife then moving across the upper surface of the table to trim off the sole margin. A plurality of elements embrace the plunger, to press the margin against the table, which elements are adjustable widthwise of the work. An ejector is provided for the severed portion. A single manual control effects first, the clamping movement of the plunger, and then the cutting movement of the knife. The work support 21 is interchangeable on operation of a quick release 91. It is supported by a plunger 23 surrounded by a sleeve 25 resting on a washer pressed upwardly by a spring 31 wound on a rod screwed into the plunger 23 which plunger is actuated by a lever 53 and treadle rod. The heel end portion of the support operates with a pair of plates 7 guided by pins 20 and slots and ribs 5 engaging a guideway 3, so that the plates may be adjusted about the point 13 by a hand-wheel 19 on a right-and left-threaded screw. The plates carry pins 36 engaging holes in a pair of members 33 pivoted together at 35 in alignment with the point 13, these members embracing the end of the work support and clamping the sole against the bevelled undersides of the plates 7. The members 33 are supported by a head 37 secured to the sleeve 25. A combined gauge and chip ejector 45 is mounted to slide longitudinally of the table and is held in normal position by a spring. At its rearward end, it carries pawls 47 co-operating with pins 52 on an arm 49 pivoted at 51 and provided with a roll 50 co-operating with the flat end of the lever 53. This lever also carries a pin 67 co-operating with a pivoted arm 69 nothced at 71 to act as a latch for a pin 73 on the arm 49. The treadle rod 65 is resiliently connected to the lever 53 through a spring 59 housed in a sleeve 57 pivoted to the lever. A pin 87 carried by the treadle rod co-operates with a lever 85 to actuate a clutch rod 77 in the drive for the knife 39. In operation, the machine having been set for the particular sole to be operated on, the heel end of the sole is positioned on the plunger against the gauge 45. The treadle is depressed and the plunger 21 rises to bulge the central part of the heel end of the sole through the opening between the plates 7, the spring-pressed clamps 33 engaging the margin. As the treadle descends, the flat end of the lever 53 swings the arm 49 rearwardly past the pawls 47 until the pin 73 is engaged by the notch 71. Finally, the lever 53 engages an adjustable stop 93. Further depression or the treadle causes the pin 87 to swing the lever 85 and cause the knife to make its cut and retreat. As the treadle is released, the pin 67 trips the arm 69 releasing the pin 73 whereupon a spring 54 causes the pins on the arm 49 to strike the pawls 47 and cause the member 45 to eject the severed portion of the heel margin.
