Abstract
519,704. Heel attaching &c. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION. Sept. 29, 1938, No. 28280. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1937. [Class 17 (i)] Relates to mechanism of the kind described in Specifications 100,111, 339,935, [both in Class 17 (i)], and 425,305, for applying pressure to the tread and rear surfaces of a heel to hold it in position for heel attaching or other operation, and consists in the provision of means for varying the relative forces exerted on the surfaces through mechanism interconnecting them. As described in the prior Specifications, a tread abutment 20 and rear abutment 22 are adjustable longitudinally of the shoe. These are mounted on vertical slides 16, 18 connected by a lever 24 pivoted at one end at 28 to the slide 16 and connected at the other end by a link 32 to the slide 18. To vary the respective pressures, the fulcrum of the lever is adjustable. This fulcrum 40 engages horizontal guide-ways in coverplates, and engages a block 38 slideable along the lever and secured to racks 42, one on each side, engaging pinions on a shaft 50 normally held stationary by an arm 58, split and clamped to the shaft by a screw 60. On slackening the screw, the shaft can be turned to increase the pressure exerted by one slide at the expense of that exerted by the other. The lever 24 is double-formed by two arms, one on each side of the pressure head.
