Abstract
521,451. Snap-action switches; actuation of switches. GOWSHALL, Ltd., and MARKLEW, A. L. Nov. 17, 1938, No. 33415. [Class 38 (v)] In a switch specially suitable for controlling road traffic signals, a motor- or hand-driven spindle n is connected by a spring q to a switch spindle or sleeve j, the latter having projections p adapted to engage in turn one of two projections 12 on a gate 4 and hold the spindle j against movement until the spring q has been sufficiently strained when a projection 9 fixed on the spindle n engages a lever 10 and causes a movement of the gate 4 against the action of springs 8 thus releasing the projection p and allowing the spindle j to rotate until another projection p comes to rest against a second projection 12 on the gate. Further rotation of the spindle n causes the gate 4 to move back and release the projection p. The projections p when released pass through gaps 11 in the gate. The switch spindle j carries cams k operating switch arms. When the spindle n is hand operated a spring-pressed plunger engages a cam disc to determine the switch positions of the spindle n. The plunger may be withdrawn when the device is motor driven. The motor drives a ratchet wheel on the spindle n by reciprocating a pawl.
