Abstract
532,908. Secret combination switches. WHITTLE, H., and BAYNES, S. Sept. 25, 1939, No. 26571. [Class 38 (v)] In a secret combination switch having a circle of depressible buttons 1 on a dial, depression of, say, 'four selected buttons in the correct order will rotate step by step a plate 11 to operate the switch; depression of any other button will rotate another plate 9 which will release the plate 11 causing this to return to its original position. The switch itself consists of a bar 6 pivoted at 18 and controlled by a dead-centre spring 17. It is moved into the "off" position by depression of a central push button 2 having a cam at its end which engages the side of the bar. To move it back into the " on position, the four selected buttons are depressed. They are relatively long and have wedge shaped ends which bear against projections 12 on the plate 11 rotating this step by step against a spring till a stop 13 engages the bar 6 and pushes this back across the dead-centre position. Return of the plate 11 is prevented by a ratchet mechanism 14 arranged between the plate 11 and the other plate 9. The other buttons are relatively short and depression of any one of them rotates a plate 9 in a similar way. This movement disengages the pawl of the ratchet from the teeth and the plate 11 returns to its normal position. Specification 458,688, [Group XXXI], is referred to.
