Abstract

1,242,420. Retractive switches. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. 28 Oct., 1968 [14 Nov., 1967], No. 51003/68. Headings H1A and H1T. A rotary key-operated switch, suitable for use as a combined ignition and starting switch for motor vehicles, having an "off" position, O, a first "on" position, Z, and a second "on" position, S, from which it retracts to the Z position on release of the operating key, is provided with a latch lever 20 to prevent movement of the rotary switching member 14 from the Z position to the S position unless it is first moved to the "off" position O. A ball detent 18 co-operates with notches 17 to locate the O and Z positions. The lever 20 is pivoted at 21 and has a projecting wall-like portion 24 which projects further at 23 such that portions 24 and 23 co-operate respectively with cams 25 and 22 on the member 14, the cam 22 being able to pass freely over the portion 24. A spring arm 19 normally urges lever 20 anticlockwise. As shown (Fig. 5) the member 14 has been moved into the Z position from the O position and can be moved further anti-clockwise to the S position wherein the cam 22 engages portion 23 to move the lever 20 over-centre with respect to spring arm 19 which then urges lever 20 clockwise, bringing the nose of portion 24 into engagement with the surface of member 14 behind the step 26 (Fig. 6, not shown). On release of the operating force a spring (27, Fig. 1, not shown), restores member 14 to the Z position and spring arm 19 causes the portion 24 to latch in front of step 26 (Fig. 7, not shown), thus preventing anti-clockwise rotation of member 14 to the S position. If member 14 is now turned back to the O position the cam 25 engages portion 24 to restore the lever 20 (Fig. 4, not shown) and the member 14 can again be moved to the Z and S positions.
