Abstract

521,198. Sliding doors or windows. EGGLETON, F. S., and SCHERMULY, A. J. Nov. 8, 1938. No. 32420. [Class 20 (iii)] Relates to sliding doors of the kind provided with pivoted links connected to the door and to a guide rail and comprises a construction wherein a stop is provided whereby the link nearest the leading edge of the door moves prior to the link at the trailing edge until the leading edge is moved outwardly clear of the door opening, whereupon continued movement of the door parallel to the wall opens the door. The door 1 is provided at the top with L-shaped brackets 2 which are connected by pivoted links 4 with H-shaped members 6 adapted to slide in a C-shaped guide 7 in the wall 8. At the bottom the door carries a guide member 10 with a curved portion 11 adapted to engage a rail 12 provided on the wall 8 or on the floor. To open the door the catch 13 is released and the handle 14 pulled towards the operator when the leading edge of the door comes out clear of the wall, the trailipg edge being prevented by the strips 16 which forms a stop. Upon sliding the door parallel to the wall the links 4 swing until they engage stops 9 on the upper edge of the door when they are about at right angles thereto. More than one guide 10 may be provided and in addition ball or roller bearings at the bottom of the door or the same mechanism fitted at the bottom as at the top. A rubber strip 15 is secured to the door to exclude draught.
