Abstract

520,987. Vehicle wheels. MARTIN, J. V. Nov. 7, 1938, No. 32276. [Class 144 (i)] A tyre for a wheel of the kind in which the load is carried in resilient suspension from the upper half of the wheel, comprises spaced rubber "spoke" elements 5 formed with crossribs 8, and separately-formed tread units 24 each having an embedded hoop 23 of hickory or like long-grained wood. The treads 24 are also formed with lugs 20 fitted between lugs 9 on the "spoke" elements 5 and connected by hickory pins 19 having headed lugs recessed into the end lugs 9. The base portions of the spokes 5 are reinforced by metal or wood insets 10 fitted with straps 11 which are formed with tee-heads 12 to engage apertures in the wheel rim 3. As shown in Fig., 15, the "spoke" elements are . moulded with their tread portions narrower than in the finished tyre so that, when the tread proper is assembled, the cross-ribs 8 are placed in tension.
